After doing lots and lots of looking through camping cookbooks and reviews here on Amazon.com, I settled on purchasing The Scout's Outdoor Cookbook and The Well-Fed Backpacker. I was so pleased when the books arrived as they were EXACTLY what I was looking for to assist me in planning a 2 week car camping trip.
Easy, filling and delicious meals that can be cooked in a dutch oven. I didn't want to spend time before the trip dehydrating food which is what most of the other books are about, nor do I need to cook gourmet food out in the wilderness (the other type of book I found). This book is wonderful and I highly recommend it to car and tent campers wanting to eat well!

For some reason, we just stick with the same few recipes for camping. Try the Pineapple Cake (which can be doubled and a big hit with even the pickiest of kids) and the Jambalaya recipe (both adults and kids love this one). Sometimes we'll dutch oven in our backyard and get creative and use scallops and hot sauce. Try preplanning and pack chopped ingredients in a gallon ziploc. A staple for dutch oven cooking. Get it on Amazon where it's cheapest.

I bought this book to expand meal possibilities while camping. Food is such a fun part of the camping experience and who knows better than scouts? I have only tried a half dozen or so recipes so far and every one has been a winner. Every week I pick a couple to try. I need to work on some of them to make them healthier but they are certainly tasty and simple. The dutch oven recipes are the ones I've focused on so far but the open fire recipes will be tried as well.

Fifty key items of jewelry are presented, each illustrated in color, many with color details. Each object is accompanied by information on date, maker (where known) and region. Specific terminology, when used, is always explained. The jewelry selected shows an enormous range of periods, regions, artistic and stylist development, and materials. Signature items featured in this volume include a magnificent pair of gold bracelets encrusted with precious stones and multicolor enamel inlay discovered inside a tomb in Olbia, Ukraine, and dating to the 1st century B.C.; a gold iris corsage ornament by Tiffany & Co., decorated with sapphires, garnets, topaz and diamonds, which was grand prize winner at the 1900 Paris Exposition universelle; and a wonderful corsage ornament of pansy blossoms executed in a combination of cast glass and plique-à-jour enamel by René Lalique, dating from 1904. The latter piece is especially significant because it marks one of the first instances of Lalique’s use of cast glass. A Glossary provides information on terms. Sabine Albersmeier is Assistant Curator for Ancient Art at the Walters Art Museum, where she is responsible for the Greek and Roman collection. Dr. Albersmeier is currently working on two upcoming exhibitions for the Walters Art Museum: the touring exhibition Bedazzled: 4,500 Years of Jewelry opening in 2006, and Reviving Ancient Glass: Imitations, Innovations, Interpretations.

Grilling really can't get much easier than this. After assembling the grill (which takes only a few minutes), simply plug it in and allow about 10 minutes to fully preheat the surface while you gather your steaks, kebabs, or whatever's to be grilled. The electric heat has an adjustable range from low (for keeping food warm) to high (for searing steaks). The nonstick grill surface not only means you can use a minimum of added fat, but it also makes cleanup a cinch. The surface has a subtle slope, with channels that draw accumulated fat or other liquids into a tray just below the surface. The high domed and vented lid helps create a circular flow of hot air to ensure even cooking--particularly important for a large roast or whole chicken.

The grill can be placed either directly on a tabletop or atop its pedestal. On its own, the grill surface stands about 6 inches high; with the pedestal, it stands about 2-1/2 feet high, not counting the domed lid. The pedestal is plenty sturdy for cooking, but the grill still seems a bit top-heavy, so pay special attention if grilling in a high-traffic area or near kids. Because of the easy electric heat, this grill can be used outdoors or indoors--when using it indoors, though, be prepared for potential spattering, steam, or other side effects of cooking. --Cynthia Nims
