Product Description

This hit-and-miss 1988 comedy pairs John Candy and Dan Aykroyd in a story of one family's summer vacation all but ruined by the uninvited appearance of another, more loutish family. Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful) directs from a half-hearted John Hughes script, which reduces Hughes's jokes-and-epiphanies formula (The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) to true gaudiness. On the other hand, Annette Bening makes her screen debut here. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, trailer, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Big disappointment

I certainly agree with Roger Ebert on this one. From a movie starring John Candy and Dan Aykroyd, written by John Hughes, you'd expect to get entertained. "The Great Outdoors" doesn't deliver. There's hardly any plot, which could have been excused if there were plenty of funny moments, but there are only very few funny scenes and even those are only mildly amusing and not exactly laugh-out-loud funny. Most of the time the movie is just silly and slow, the plot going nowhere. Considering the talent involved it's a big disappointment and only worth watching if you're a very big fan of the stars.
The Funniest Movie Ever Made

I know 70 people have already reviewed this movie, but I have to add this is the funniest movie ever made. The two scenes of John Candy skiing behind the race boat and the scene with the bear in the cabin causes me to hurt myself with uncontrollable laughter (at least 15 times). Even the trailers at the end of the movie are hilarious with the raccoons discussing the bad luck of the bear and everyone dancing at the bar to "Land of a thousand dances".

The movie I prefer is The Great Outdoors. When I watched that movie I laughed my head off. It is hilarious. The funniest part to me was when he shot an 8ft. bear in the butt and it knocked his hair off, it was pale white and it shined in the light

It's also filled with adventure. So the man goes down a mining hole to save his twin
daughters. Then he then he falls into the water that looks freezing cold, well he get's them
out but what he didn't know was that the 8ft. bear was in there watching him. Oh yeah
something else there is this dude Ridge who get's shocked by lightning 67 times and he's
got a white streak going down his head. He looks like a skunk.

The dude also gives two giant bears some candy . Oh my gosh one of the bears get's on the hood and tries to break the glass to get in. The other one is on the top of the car bouncing up and down. This movie is for all families.
Good Movie

The Great Outdoors starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy is a film my parents loved but I always thought this was just a so-so comedy. Written by John Hughes, The Great Outdoors does have some funny moments but overall I found some of the slapstick kind of gross. Annette Bening is such an under-rated actress, I think she's a hoot! I wish John Candy would have done more drama flicks because I think he had it in him, you could tell this guy had range. This film is a mixed bag for me.
